Step 1: Get your Teaching Qualification
Formerly known as PTLLS, the Level 3 Award in Education & Training is the recognised entry-level teaching qualification for adult education. It is ideal for those who want to teach private short courses within a salon, academy or home environment.
This course fully meets the requirements of the Level 3 Award in Education & Training and covers lesson planning, delivery, learner assessment, and a practical micro-teach assessment.
The course covers:
-
Lesson planning
-
Delivering training sessions
-
Assessing learners
-
Understanding roles and responsibilities as a trainer
This qualification allows you to teach up to the level of qualification you personally hold. For example, if you hold a Level 4 qualification, you can teach learners up to Level 4. You do not need to repeat the AET as you progress academically.

Step 2: Get Certified to Deliver Accredited Courses
To ensure your beauty training courses are recognised and insurable, they must be accredited by an approved awarding or accreditation body.
Once you have completed the Level 3 AET Teaching Course, you will need to apply for course accreditation.
In the UK, well-known accreditation providers include ABT and CPD. Each organisation has its own criteria, benefits, and application process.
Typically, accreditation application requires:
-
Proof of your teaching qualification
-
Lesson plans (we include a lesson plan example within the course)
-
Training materials such as manuals and certificate templates (we can provide these)
The accrediting organisation will review your submission to ensure it meets their professional standards.
Please note: Choosing an accreditation provider is your responsibility. Each accreditation company has its own criteria, fees, and ongoing requirements, so we always recommend carrying out your own research to ensure the provider suits your business goals.
As a rough guideline, initial accreditation fees typically range from £150–£400, depending on the organisation and number of courses submitted.
Step 3: Get Insurance as a Beauty Trainer
Once your courses are accredited, the final step is obtaining trainer insurance.
In many cases, you can contact your existing insurance provider and add teaching cover to your policy. Alternatively, specialist providers offer insurance specifically for beauty educators.
We recommend Policy Bee. Who offer flexible cover for beauty trainers and academies.

Level 3 Award in Education & Training (PTLLS)
To teach and assess in your beauty or aesthetics academy, you’ll need the Level 3 Award in Education & Training (PTLLS).
This is an entry-level teaching qualification that certifies you to train adults professionally.
You must be:
-
Aged 19 or over
-
Have a good standard of written and spoken English
Entry-level? Does That Mean I Need to Do More Teacher Training?
No.
The Level 3 Award in Education & Training is described as entry-level because it is the starting point for becoming a teacher - not because it is limited or needs upgrading later.
Once you have completed the Level 3 AET, you do not need to complete any further teaching qualifications to continue teaching.
This qualification allows you to teach up to the level of qualification you personally hold. For example:
-
If you hold a Level 4 qualification, you can teach up to Level 4
-
If you later gain a Level 5 or Level 7 qualification, this automatically extends the level you are able to teach
You do not need to repeat or upgrade your teaching qualification as you progress academically.
The Level 3 AET is a one-time teaching qualification, not a stepping stone that requires further teacher training.
What courses can I offer?
You can teach any course that you personally hold a qualification in.
For example, if you are qualified in Gel Polish and Lash Lifts, you can teach those courses. You can deliver training:
-
One-to-one
-
In group settings
-
In person or online
You remain in control of your academy structure and course offerings.
This depends entirely on how much time you can dedicate to it. The course is completed online at your own pace and expires within one year of purchase.
Some learners complete it within a few weeks, while others take longer depending on work and personal commitments.
No formal teaching placement is required. The course includes a short micro-teach session as part of the assessment, which can be completed in a controlled or simulated environment.
This makes the qualification accessible even if you are not currently teaching.
A micro-teach is a short, pre-recorded teaching video that forms part of the Level 3 Award in Education & Training assessment.
You will record yourself delivering a 10-minute teaching session based on a skill you intend to teach in the future. This is not a live assessment - there are no Zoom calls, no live teaching, and no audience required.
The video can be recorded in your own time, in a comfortable and familiar environment, and then submitted for assessment.
You will be assessed on:
-
How you structure your session
-
Your communication and teaching methods
-
Learner engagement and professionalism
This assessment is designed to be supportive and accessible, even if you have no prior teaching experience.
Our Level 3 Award in Education & Training (AET) course is accredited by ABT, a well-known and established accreditation organisation within the UK beauty industry.
ABT accreditation confirms that the course content, assessments, and delivery meet recognised industry standards for private training and education.
Successful learners receive a Level 3 AET certificate upon completion.
Yes. The Level 3 Award in Education & Training is the industry-recognised teaching qualification used by private training providers within beauty and aesthetics.
It is suitable for those wishing to:
-
Deliver private beauty and aesthetics training
-
Apply for course accreditation
-
Obtain trainer insurance
-
Set up their own beauty academy
The Level 3 Award in Education & Training covers the fundamentals of teaching adult learners, including lesson planning, session delivery, assessment methods, inclusive learning, and a recorded micro-teach assessment.
The qualification is not subject-specific, meaning it applies across all beauty, hair and aesthetics disciplines.
We include a lesson plan example within the teaching course, which you can use as a template to create your own plans for any beauty or aesthetics course.
Training manuals must meet accreditation standards and clearly support the learning outcomes of the course being delivered.
If you are unsure what to include, we offer accreditation-approved training manuals that can be purchased separately. These manuals are professionally structured, customisable, and designed to save you time when setting up your courses.
Creating professional training manuals from scratch is time-consuming and often one of the biggest obstacles new trainers face. To make the process easier, we have created our own accreditation-approved training manuals, designed specifically for beauty and aesthetics trainers.
Benefits of using our manuals:
-
Already approved by accreditation providers
-
Professionally structured and industry-relevant
-
Fully customisable to suit your branding and teaching style
-
Saves you hours (often months) of work
-
Ideal for new trainers setting up quickly and correctly
These manuals can be edited to reflect your own wording, logo, and course delivery style, allowing you to focus on teaching rather than paperwork.
Manuals are available to purchase separately
